|Cowles Meade House
Washington, Adams County, MS
|At one time, this was the home of Cowles Meade, Secretary to the MS Territory, Speaker of the
House and an acting governor of Mississippi. He, also, was a representative at the Mississippi
Statehood Convention, held in Adams County in 1817, for the purpose of drafting the state's
first constitution. It was from Cowles Meade that the town of Meadville took its name. This
house was constructed in 1807. These photographs were taken in 1936.
