| Interior, Milton Latter Public Library, St. Charles Avenue; built in 1907 and once the mansion of a silent film star, this elegant building has served as a branch of the New Orleans Public Library since the parents of a young man who was killed in WWII presented it to the city in 1948. The Latter family has donated time and money through the years to keep the building in good condition. It's a beautiful place and retains much of the atmosphere it did long years ago as a private home. When I was a child and teenager, this was one of my favorite places to daydream about times past. |

| Below, local landmark, St. Roch Chapel and Cemetery. The story of St. Roch Chapel goes something like this: During a yellow fever epidemic in New Orleans in 1868, the pastor of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church prayed to St. Roch to spare his parishioners and promised to build a chapel in his honor. Legend has it that none of his parishioners died and the priest kept his promise. In 1874, a cemetery was started; its design was modeled after the famous Campo Santo dei Tedesci, near St. Peter's in Rome. Read more about St. Roch's. |
