Rodney Baptist Church
Jefferson County
Mississippi
Also known as Mt. Zion Baptist Church No. 1, Rodney Baptist Church was constructed
in 1850 and the building combines elements of both Greek Revival and Gothic
Revival.  It's one of two churches still standing in the ghost town of Rodney.

This church is in a more precarious situation than Rodney's Presbyterian Church,
because the ground around it tends to hold water.  On the day my family visited, the
Presbyterian Church was high and dry, but they had to wade through water mid-calf
deep to reach the Baptist Church, as you'll see in the photos below.  Due to repeated
flooding, the interior of the building is in very poor condition.
The pictures on this page were taken by my son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter on a
recent trip to Claiborne, Jefferson and Adams Counties.  They visited historic churches,
cemeteries and a synagogue in Port Gibson.  They strolled through the haunting ghost
towns of Rocky Springs and Rodney and visited their ancient cemeteries.

They took photos in cemeteries that author Eudora Welty photographed in the 1930's, when
they had already been abandoned by towns that had all but ceased to be.  And they wondered
at the fragile nature of the monuments we build, believing that they will last forever.

On the exterior of the building, you can see the water marks
all the way up to the windows left by the most recent flood.
